Margate...'oceans and pink doors'
“We do not look back, we do not turn to salt this time. We are the ocean”
This is one of my favourite quotes about the ocean. It is by Nigerian poet Titilope Shonuga (@deartitilope) - I heard her poetry for the first time on ‘Gidi up’ a Nigerian series set in Lagos, which I love.
Speaking of Oceans, I recently visited the seaside-town of Margate in Kent with some faves and omg I could not hold my excitement. I went not expecting much and I ended up finding this tiny quaint town filled with so much art, coffee-shops, patisseries, oceans and basically every thing I love in one place. I even found a piece of home there.
Margate was recently voted the best British seaside town in the UK beating Sandbanks and Whitby. It was also voted the Hipster destination for 2016, which did not come as a surprise at all given the entire town’s retro buzz. Margate recently went through a huge renovation to give the town this urban retro vibe that has been attracting artsy and retro types from all over the UK. It’s famous theme-park Dreamland was also recently renovated by fashion designer Wayne Hemingway and his wife Geraldine. Artists have also taken a hand in renovating some of the town’s architecture by using artwork and colour to give the old buildings new life, which explains all the colourful doors in the town, which I loved.
The entire town now has this vintage feel which is perfect for art lovers and creatives. A recent article actually described Margate as a “Creative Quarter that includes artist-led spaces and arts and crafts shops with in-built studio areas which has been attracting arty types and young trendy Londoners.”
It took us about two hours by road to get to Margate. Here are some of the pictures from this quant little town. Might have left a piece of my heart there..
Found the most colourful stairs...
Did I mention that I love pretty store fronts...
And then we found the cutest Pink door...
So much colour in one place.
Did I mention that I found a piece of home in one of the stores? Peep the painting on the wall
So much art in one place...
We found about four different Art galleries at least.
What was interesting about these paintings on the wall was that the artist said she had painted everything with spoons. If that isn't talent, I don't know what is!
This one was one of my faves!
The recently re-opened theme-park Dreamland
Apparently, this is the world's largest bouncy castle and Margate was lucky to have it that weekend. It can accommodate close to 100 people at a time.
More of the theme-park...
...and the cutest coffee-shop!
Almost everything I love in one place! I will definitely be returning soon.
